We're Back

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the lack of posts but school kept me a little busy - but hurray for summer!!

Soon I will give you an update on my new garden.  I am gardening in big barrels this year after my huge bug infestation last summer.  I would love to see what you think about it.  I am curious to know what kinds of harvest I will get out of it.

Just a reminder that we do have a sealer for mylar bags and also the canner for your personal use.  Please contact me at 501-593-3506 to schedule time for the canner.

You have noticed prices going up in the store - we would encourage you to look through your pantry and decide what you use regularly.  Look for the products in the weekly grocery ads so you will know when they go on sale.  Then you can stock up at good prices.

We will have a solar oven cooking class this summer, most likely in July when the sun will be especially cooperative :-)

If you have questions, or need some tutoring in a specific topic, please call Janet or I and we will help you in any way we can.

Recipes from our Last Meeting

Thanks to everyone who showed up Tuesday - it was a great turnout! I am glad I have a lot of bowls, lol.

Remember some of our upcoming topics - making buddy burners, solar cooking, gardening, making English muffins, and generators. If you have more topics, send them my way and we will find someone who knows them. I personally think we need a good first aid refresher course.

Tuesday night our little cardboard ovens made bread, rolls, monkey bread, cake, biscuits and baked chicken! We all ended the night full.

Thank you, Marty and Janet, for bringing your oven and preparing all of that food for us, we appreciate it.

The recipe below is called basic for a reason - it is barebones. You can experiment and look on line and find all kinds of bread recipes. Keep trying them until you find the one you really, really like.

Basic White Bread

Around 4 cups white flour
1 TB yeast
2 TB sugar
1 TB oil
about 1 1/3 c warm water

Mix all of the ingredients except 2 C flour. Save that for later. Remember to let your mixture "sponge" to develop the gluten. Add flour to knead by hand until it is glossy and it "looks" like a loaf :-) You can let it rise once and punch down to rise again, or just let it rise one time. Again, experiment and do what works for you. You can make them into rolls or cinnamon rolls if you want. Bake the bread at 375. Rolls can be baked at 425.

The recipe for the Olive Garden Breadsticks can be found HERE. Enjoy, they are really yummy.

Back in the Saddle Again

This Thursday - 6:30pm!!

Mark your calendar - we are restarting our Monthly Provident Living Meetings.

Our square-foot gardener has a scheduling conflict, so this Thursday we will be practicing how to bake breads without any electricity...what?!? No bread mixer? That's right. AND no oven.

Come see how it is done.

It may - or may not - be a resounding success.

BUT you won't want to miss it either way.

Bring a friend or two - we will have a great time.

Checking In

Hello Everyone,

I think we are ready to get back in the saddle, so to speak. I spent this morning before Church staring at my food storage and motivating myself to regroup and reorganize. But that is a lesson in prepardedness - it has hills and valleys. The important thing is we keep moving forward.

So......

Last Thursday, Steven, Linda and I met for a "net" of ham radio operators. It only lasts a couple of minutes. Afterwards, we got to talking about what would happen in the event of,....say...., a major ice storm. We would want a way to check on people and what if, just what if, cell phones were not working. And what about after two weeks of no power with no way to recharge those phones? It would be nice to keep track of things with a ham radio. So we are thinking of starting our own group of ham radio operators. Once a month we would just do about a 10 minute practice. We would be assigned beforehand a responsibility and then report to the group via the ham. For example, my job may be to check the weather outside, or how many cars are on my street, or to check on my neighbor next door. Then at the specified date and time, I would just call in on my radio to give my report. Easy, right?

Now - what if you don't have your license yet? Steven is ready to do a class any time there is interest. Last time NINE people got licensed. Amazing!!

No radio? You can get a good radio for $120. Start saving!!

More information on our club will be forthcoming.

Now - on to other news. Our Provident Living Classes. We will start having them on the 2nd Thursday of the Month. First class (cross your fingers) Square Foot Gardening. Even if you plan on doing a "regular" garden, the concepts are still good.

More information to follow - start getting the word out.
